WELCOME to drivesuffolk.org.uk - a website to support a campaign to increase the number of volunteer drivers in Suffolk. Dozens of community transport schemes and charities in the county rely on volunteer drivers to run their services. Thousands of individuals - many of them older people, disabled people and people who are rurally isolated - rely on these services to get out and about. Ask any of the organisations who use volunteer drivers whether they have enough, the answer will nearly always be "no!". In fact some services have to be cancelled and the future of some organisations is under threat due to a shortage of drivers.
WHO IS INVOLVED IN THE CAMPAIGN
Midsuffolk Action in Partnership have teamed up with Optua, Suffolk Acre, Suffolk Volunteering Federation and some of the counties community transport providers to run the campaign.
WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR
Promotional material has been sent to hundreds of community organisations throughout the county - such as parish councils, churches and rotary clubs. The campaign has featured in a number of community magazines in Suffolk.
On 1st and 2nd June 2007, a convoy of community transport vehicles travelled round Suffolk in a bid to raise awareness of the campaign. Organised by Suffolk Acre, the convoy received coverage in the local press and on local radio. As a result a number of potential volunteers expressed an interest.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
A section has been added to this website: "Volunteer Driver Vacancies." Any voluntary or community group in Suffolk can register volunteer driver vacancies on this section in order to create a "situations vacant" list of voluntary driver roles. We hope that potential volunteers will be more likely to come forward if they can see a specific position in a certain location.
PLEASE DISPLAY THIS POSTER AND SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN
we are still looking to raise general awareness of the shortage of drivers in Suffolk. You can help us achieve this by printing off this poster and displaying it at a prominent location.
